October 20, 1990 - "Everybody Everybody" by the Italian music group Black Box featuring singer Martha Wash peaked at No.8 on the Hot 100. It was the third single from their debut album Dreamland (1990), and was released in March 1990 in most countries worldwide. The song was a hit on several charts, particularly on the Hot Dance Club Play in the United States, where it reached No.1 for three consecutive weeks from July 21 to August 4, 1990. The song also peaked at No.2 on the U.S. R&B Chart, No.16 on the UK Singles Chart, and achieved a great success in Ireland (No.6). In Zimbabwe "Everybody Everybody" peaked at No.1 for 9 weeks in total. The song features an uncredited Martha Wash on lead vocals. As was customary in their music videos, live performances and album cover art, Katrin Quinol, a French model, was featured lip-synching the lyrics sung by Wash. In September 1990, Martha Wash sued Black Box and RCA Records for commercial appropriation after she became aware of the lip-sync scandal perpetrated by the group. During the record session of their album Dreamland in 1989, Wash was recruited as a session singer to simply demo songs produced by Black Box. Unbeknownst to her, Black Box retained Wash's vocals on a total of six songs including "Everybody Everybody", "Open Your Eyes", "Hold On", "I Don't Know Anybody Else", "Strike It Up", and "Fantasy" on the album Dreamland. Despite Wash's contributions to the songs, Black Box never credited Wash for her vocals and instead used Quinol to lip-sync Wash's vocals during music videos, televised performances, and concert performances. RCA settled the case out-of-court in December 1990, agreeing to pay Wash a "substantial" financial fee. The company also signed her to an eight-album recording contract and financed her national tour. Wash's lawsuit also resulted in federal legislation making vocal credit mandatory for all albums and music videos. The Village Voice listed "Everybody Everybody" number 55 in their list of "Top Singles Of The 90's" in 1999. BuzzFeed listed the song number 14 in their "The 101 Greatest Dance Songs of the '90s" list in 2017.
